Today’s economy situation is harder to expect how it would move in the future, and because of it, college students are more likely to face difficult situations for getting job than before. It is the time to pay more attention on making decision for going to college or not.
I read a book, A current View of Higher Education, written by Dr. Clint Vogus, focused on considerable issues, such as today’s economic situation, cost of higher education, student loans and so on that would effect in making decision for going to college. I learned many facts that we have to know before staring college, and what we need to prepare for it from this book.
The most interesting and beneficial part for me is after section7, focusing on going college or not, and when going, and what study in college for your career. According to the book, a college degree does not guarantee a good paying career unfortunately. Today college degree gives you only an opportunity.
According to the book, over half indicated students who went to primarily college did not have a clear purpose for going. Honestly I did not have a specific purpose for going when I decided to go to Japanese college. I was interested in international cooperation field at least though. I did not have any goal what I want to be at starting college. In my opinion, no purpose for going college could be some reasons why some employers think college degree is less important. Actually the book said that eighty-four percent of employers rate college graduates as unprepared or only somewhat prepared for the jobs. Dr. Clint suggested that if you do not have a clear understanding of why you want to go college, it is better to delay going until you are better prepared.
Also, there are some students who go to college primarily to prepare for a good paying career. I think this purpose might fall into pitfall. The book said college majors that would lead to high paying, but it would change and affected by economy change. I believe that considering your career goal is more important than caring high paying in your decision for going college. The book mentioned several times that you choose your major on what you love (passion), what you are good at (ability), and then what pays well (financial security). I strongly agree this point.
In addition to good points in decision making for major, the book told you what skills you would be required for your career. Dr. Clint mentioned the “soft” skills such as communications, problem solving, decision-making, adaptability, and critical thinking, are need for job and career success.
After reading the book, I can tell why I could get job that suits my career goals. I had clear purpose for going college, and I have clear goals for future. Also I experienced career related internship in New York. And I could talk and explain clearly about those at job interview. From my experienced at several job interviews, it is true that employers expect candidates of having specific career goal like what you want to do on the job, having “soft” skills, internship experiences, and other organizations works. Also employers pay more attention how well candidates talk about it clearly at the job interview. I believed and still believe your own individual goals for education and career are the most important considerations in your decision for the future!!!
Thank you for reading!
